Split Bone Block

Khoury Technique or Split Bone Block Technique

The Khoury Technique, described in the literature as the Split Bone Block Technique, has been named after many different terms such as The “Box technique”or the “Shell technique”. This reconstructive technique is a widely used approach for bone augmentation in implant dentistry. The term “Split Bone Block” comes from the thin cortical bone plates that characterize the method and make it predictable for long-term implant success.

What is the Khoury Technique?

Originally developed by Prof. Fouad Khoury, this bone grafting method uses thin autogenous cortical bone plates obtained after spliiting a bone block normally harvested from the retromolar area. These plates form a rigid frame that is filled with particulate bone chips, creating a compartment that remodels into vital bone.

Why is it Called the “Box technique”?

The expression “box technique” comes from the appearance of the reconstruction once is done. The thin cortical bone plates used in this procedure resemble the walls of a box.. In the literature it is described as the Split Bone Block Technique, but most clinicians simply refer to it as the Khoury Technique. There is also some other terms in online searches as the term “Khoury Plate Technique” to name this technique. This terms also tries to merge both the concept of the thin bone plates and the name of its creator, Prof. Khoury.

Why Choose this technique?

Compared with traditional block grafts or GBR, this technique provides:

  • Fast revascularization graft that will integrate implants naturally.
  • Long-term volume stability.
  • Fewer complications with almost no graft resorption.
  • Excellent outcomes for horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation.

Scientific Terminology

Although dentists use different names, they all refer to the same biological concept.

In scientific publications, the procedure is formally described as the Split Bone Block Technique. However, clinicians worldwide commonly refer to it as the Khoury Technique, while online searches often use terms such as Khoury Plate Technique, Bone Box Technique, or Shell Technique.

Understanding these different names helps clinicians identify the same surgical approach across scientific articles, courses, and clinical discussions.

Clinical Indications

This augmentation approach is ideal for:

  • Cases in which bone grafting is mandatory for implant placement.
  • Horizontal ridge augmentation.
  • Vertical bone augmentation.

Comparison with Other Bone Grafting Methods

Unlike classical bone block grafts, which may undergo partial resorption, cortical plates maintain their structure, acting as a natural scaffold. Compared with GBR, the Khoury Technique does not depend on barrier membranes, reducing risks of exposure and failure.

Learn the Khoury Technique in the USA

At BoneCourse USA, this bone augmentation method—often searched as the Khoury Plate Technique, but scientifically known as the Khoury Technique (Split Bone Block Technique)—is a central part of our Bone Reconstruction Course. Participants gain a step-by-step understanding of:

  • Harvesting and shaping cortical plates.
  • Fixation techniques.
  • Alternative approaches to avoid bone exposures.
  • Long-term results and clinical success rates.
  • Advanced soft tissue techniques: Kazanjian vestibuloplasty, rotated palatal flap, tunnel approach for bone grafting.

FAQs about the Khoury Technique

Is the Khoury Plate Technique or the “Bone Box technique” the same as the Khoury Technique?

Yes. The term “plate” refers to the cortical bone plates used in the procedure.

In the scientific literature it is called the Split Bone Block Technique, and among clinicians it is widely known as the Khoury Technique. All three names describe the same method.

Is the Khoury Technique suitable for all cases?

Best for localized horizontal and vertical defects.

Does it require autogenous bone?

Yes, cortical plates and particulated bone chips should be autologous.

How stable is the graft long term?

Studies show excellent stability with low resorption and high implant success rates. Join our Bone Reconstruction Course and master the Khoury Technique for advanced bone grafting and predictable implant dentistry. Reserve Now
